It is that time of year again to help clean up the multitude of assorted trash that has collected on our South County beaches and surfing breaks since the summer. The Rhode Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will again sponsor the annual "Trick or Trash Fall Clean-up" which will take place not only locally, but also in Newport and Middletown. The first big clean-up of the year took place in May and was a huge success. Several tons of trash and e-trash were collected, along with hazardous wastes. Last year's "Trick or Trash" netted thousands of pounds of man made wastes, along with over 2.5 tons of monitors, e-junk, and television sets that were collected. Only slightly over 40 volunteers showed up for that clean-up and Surfrider Foundation spokesman Dave Prescott is hoping that more show up this coming weekend. "We were a bit disappointed in the turnout of volunteers," he said. "But we managed to utilize everyone to the fullest. We hope to collect trash from virtually every surf break in the area, including Westerly and Newport." Although there will be no hazardous waste recycling center, this clean-up will feature a much needed computer, e-junk and television set recycling station which is open to the public. This is a great opportunity for local residents to dispose of any unwanted monitors and television sets that would otherwise have to be hauled to a waste disposal site for a fee. The Wakefield based Recycling Solutions/Cartridge World is sponsoring the recycle center and it will be located in the north parking lot of the Narragansett Town Beach. Interested volunteers are asked to show up anytime between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM at the Surfrider beach clean-up headquarters in the south parking lot of the Narragansett Town Beach. They will then be directed to various surfing sites in the area for trash pick-ups. Participants should return to the main location by 1:00 PM where a free barbecue will be offered to all volunteers by the Surfrider Foundation. Prescott noted that; "We really need trucks and people that are willing to provide the services and vehicle to help transport the trash back to the town beach. We also need beach clean-up captains that can take ownership of certain beaches, breaks and other coastal locations. Dave has requested that anyone interested in volunteering their trucks or taking charge of specific clean-up locations to email Carissa Lord of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For those volunteers that would like to assist in cleaning up the west side of the bay, the clean-up central location will be in the west parking lot of Easton's Beach in Newport. This clean-up will begin at 9:00 AM and finish at 11:00 AM. There will be no recycling center at the Newport location.
