Written by Press Release

Newport, RI –  After almost a two month waiting period, on October 25 the second annual Scion Core Cup surf contest  finally went down.   With 32 of New Englands best surfers staged at 2nd beach in Newport, RI, all the contest needed was a little help from mother nature , and she delivered a consistent head high swell  all day. Marc Angelillo, contest director and commentator, said  "It  just seemed  to get better as the day went on, it broke solid for the six hours it took to run the entire event and I thought the finals had some of the best waves of the day ... It was just one sweet day enjoyed by everyone!"

The surfers battled their way through 4 rounds which consisted of 15 four man highly competitive heats, with a final that would go down as one of the best battles that New England surfers had seen from two Cape Cod surfers in years.

Rounding out the top eight finalists were Casey Lockwood, NH in 8th place who also took home the Best n' Biggest move award with his heavy duty front side hack, 7th place went to Sam Boardman, ME and last years champion, 6th place was taken by a South Shore MA. local Dan Hassett, 5th place was local boy John McGuirl who's consistency and determination almost got him into the finals.  The finals broke down as a young gun from Nantucket, Ryan Webb landed in 4th, 3rd place was earned by Brian Sargent a local who at 39 years of age doesn't seem to be effected by father time.  Coming in second  place forcing a lead change a couple of times in the finals was Cape Cod slayer Dillon Murphy and taking home 1st place for the 2009 Scion Core Cup and a $1400 check was Adam Lauro, also from  Cape Cod, M A .  It should be recognized that not only did Adam take the cup home but he laid claim the highest wave heat score.  All told , a $5100  cash purse was distributed and more in prizes among the top 8 finishers making this one of the largest purses in New England surf history.

The title sponsor for the event was Scion and supporting sponsors for the event included Island Surf and Sports, Rip Curl, Oneill, Creatures of Leisure, Ocean Minded, Smith Optics, Rumba Energy Juice, Skullcandy, Vec Surfboards, Sticky bumps, Wax Buddy, Z Block, and Rumba Energy Juice.

A special thanks goes out again to all of the volunteers, judges, our host surf shop, our head statistician / tabulator Bob McNeil and Link Marketing's Skip Winter, event creator and founder who has blessed us with the second Scion Core Cup Surf contest and event.
